Insight into the Role of Cerium (III) Addition to a MgAl-LDH Coating on AA6082

In this work, Ce doped MgAl-LDHs layers have been developed through an in-situ synthesis method on 6082 aluminum surface. The aim was to gain mechanistic insight into the role of Ce(III) as active corrosion inhibitor embedded in LDHs layer. development LDH structure verified by checking presence characteristic XRD peaks, platelet morphology (evaluated SEM-EDXS) and functional groups (by FTIR-ATR analyses). same techniques were employed assess effect a prolonged immersion time 0.1 NaCl MgAl-LDH coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) monitor evolution electrochemical properties coatings during saline solutions. findings suggest crystallization/dissolution/precipitation mechanism which implies: (i) formation crystalline cerium compounds, such Ce(OH)3, synthesis; (ii) dissolution upon exposure solution, thus leading ions release; (iii) precipitation amorphous oxides/hydroxides at cathodic sites when metal starts corrode; (iv), consequent mitigation activity and, thus, reduction extent corrosion.
